How to Choose a Tyre Changer Machine for Your Fitment Bay
A tyre changer is the heart of any fitment bay — it is the machine your business runs on, all day, every day. Buy too little machine and it slows the bay down and wears out; buy too much and you have tied up cash you could have spent elsewhere. This guide walks through the choice so you can match the machine to the work you actually do.

Manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic?
Tyre changers fall into three broad levels, and the right one depends on your volume.
Manual tyre changers
A manual tyre changer needs no air or electricity and is ideal for low-volume work, mobile use, or specialist jobs like motorcycle tyres. It is affordable and reliable, but every operation is done by hand, so it is not built for a busy bay turning dozens of wheels a day.
Semi-automatic swing-arm changers
The semi-automatic swing-arm changer is the workhorse of most fitment centres. The mounting head is locked in place manually but the turntable and bead-breaker are powered, giving you a good balance of speed and price for standard passenger and light-commercial work. A semi-auto with a helper arm adds an assist arm that holds the bead down, which makes stiff modern low-profile tyres far easier and faster.
Fully automatic tilt-back changers
For high volume and difficult tyres, a fully automatic tilt-back tyre changer is the fastest and least tiring to operate. The mounting head tilts away and returns to the exact position automatically, so operator effort and error both drop. If your bay is your main income and it runs flat out, this is where the machine pays for itself in throughput.
Match the clamping range to your wheels
Every changer has a rim clamping range (for example 11″–24″). Check the largest and smallest wheels you actually service. A bay doing standard cars and bakkies is well covered by a passenger machine; if you take on 4x4s with big rims or run-flats, make sure the machine and its assist arm can handle them before you buy. Truck and OTR work is a different machine class entirely — a dedicated OTR truck tyre changer is built for the size and weight involved.
Think about the whole bay, not just the changer
A tyre changer never works alone. Every tyre you mount has to be balanced afterward on a wheel balancer, and a busy bay also needs the tyre service accessories — bead boosters, inflators, mounting paste and weights — that keep the work flowing. If you are kitting out a bay from scratch, our start-up garage combo pairs a changer and balancer with the lifting gear in one package.
Buying with confidence
Whatever level you choose, buy a machine that is supported: spares held locally and someone to call when you need help. Every changer in our tyre changer range is supplied new with manufacturer warranty, prices include VAT, and operator training is available so your team gets the full benefit of the machine. Tell us your daily volume and wheel sizes and we will recommend the right model — get in touch here.
